Trust me, I know how hard it can be to find a professional framing company. There are a lot of factors to consider, some of which may not be so obvious. First of all, different custom framing shops have different equipment. One question I can think of at the top of my head is whether or not they have the capability to cut custom mats. Let’s say you’re googling collage picture frames, and it pops into your head that you’d really like to have your family’s last name cut out of the mat so you can show off your family reunion pictures. Yes, there is a machine that does that. You Don’t want to go to a company that does their picture mats by hand. You want a professional framing company that has the software, machinery and talent on hand to be able to work those tools. Another consideration: glass picture frames versus acrylic. Nowadays, acrylic is so refined to where it’s as clear as glass. As CSD Framing, we won’t even frame in glass unless it’s provided by the customer. Why? Glass breaks. Glass doesn’t protect against UV rays. There are so many reasons to use plexi that we don’t even have glass in stock. Perhaps you’re wondering whether you want a metal, acrylic (fancy word for plastic of all varieties/compositions) or wood frame. This is the fun part of the process. Each professional framing company should have a ton of selections for you to choose from, and they need to be from reputable, high-quality companies, not a no-name from China. A lot of so-called professional framing companies use the cheapest moulding they can get for their frames. I know for a fact that CSD doesn’t, because I can take thirty steps into the back and see the meters-tall boxes of moulding from Monarch or Larson Juhl Moulding that we have yet to cut (we do each frame custom, which means by order). These are just some of the factors to consider. The list can go on and on.
